What CSR is — and why every company should understand it.

Corporate Social Responsibility is the practical responsibility of an organisation for the impacts of its decisions and activities on people, society and the environment. It is broader than donations or volunteering, and it should not be confused with sustainability reporting alone.

CSR

How an organisation behaves responsibly in its decisions, operations and relationships.

  • ethics & governance
  • people & human rights
  • environment & community
  • customers & fair practices

ESG

A lens used to organise and assess environmental, social and governance information, risks, impacts and performance.

  • useful for investors and management
  • often metrics- and disclosure-oriented
  • not a substitute for responsible behaviour

Sustainability

The long-term ability to meet present needs while protecting people, resources and future capacity.

  • environmental resilience
  • social resilience
  • economic durability
  • intergenerational thinking

Regulatory status matters — especially in 2026.

CSR as a management concept applies far beyond legal reporting obligations, but specific EU duties depend on company size, jurisdiction and activity. The CSRD and CSDDD frameworks were materially amended by Directive (EU) 2026/470. The Commission adopted revised ESRS on 3 July 2026; the Commission states they are intended for financial year 2027, with optional use for 2026, subject to the delegated-act process. CSR Scenario Guide.

Select the characteristics of a situation and receive an educational decision lens: what domain it touches, who should normally be involved, what due-diligence thinking matters and what evidence should be preserved. It does not make legal or compliance determinations.

What situation are you looking at?

Use only generic scenario characteristics. Do not enter names, personal information or confidential company data.

Educational scenario result

Start with the impact.

A responsible-business response begins by understanding who or what may be affected, then connecting the issue to the right internal owners and a proportionate due-diligence process.

First principleDo not treat CSR issues as a communications problem before assessing the underlying impact.
Use the right evidencePolicies matter, but implementation records, stakeholder information, actions and outcomes matter too.

Educational guidance only. Real decisions should follow applicable law, company procedures, competent professional advice and current official sources.

Role-based learning

Different roles need different depth.

Every employee benefits from CSR awareness, but the level of knowledge should match the decisions, influence and risks attached to the role.

Official reference map

Learn from the source.

CSR is shaped by voluntary guidance, international norms and binding law. These sources do not all have the same legal status, so the platform distinguishes guidance from regulation and encourages users to verify current applicability.

Important regulatory note: This platform is educational and does not determine whether a company is legally in scope of CSRD, ESRS, CSDDD or any national requirement. Scope, transition dates and reporting standards have changed significantly in 2025–2026. Use current official texts and qualified advice for company-specific compliance decisions. ISO 26000 is guidance and is not a certifiable management-system standard.
